BOAF's Training Programs
were renewed by the Florida Building Code
Administrators & Inspectors Board in
February, 2004. These programs provide an
acceptable alternate training standard for
individuals, with the support of their local
government employers, to qualify for
examination in other licensure categories.
It is reasonable to expect that a local
government employer may require a service
commitment for a predetermined period after
facilitating completion of one or more of
these programs.
BOAF is an approved DBPR Continuing Education
and Training Program Provider #0001001

| Question: |
When do I submit my application? |
| Answer: |
The entire package, application AND
required documentation, must be submitted
after all required training has been
completed.
|
| Question: |
Can I use classroom or on-the-job
training that I received in the past? |
| Answer: |
Yes, but all training must have occurred
within the three years immediately preceding
your application submittal and must be
properly documented.
|
| Question: |
Will I receive a BCAIB license if I
complete a training program? |
| Answer: |
No. You will receive a certificate of
completion. The certificate of completion of
a BOAF Training Program is acceptable to the
BCAIB as an alternative to 5 years of
experience when applying to take an exam in
a new category.
|
| Question: |
Can I use these training programs if
I don't work for a city or county? |
| Answer: |
No. BOAF's training programs were
established to meet specific needs of cities
and counties. They rely on the stability and
organizational structure of local government
building departments for consistency.
Private entities or persons not employed by
a local building department do not qualify.
|
| Question: |
Why should a building department
invest this much time and training in an
employee? |
| Answer: |
Cities and counties have long expressed
a desire to improve the qualifications of
their employees through the tried-and-true
methods of classroom and on-the-job
training, utilizing the experienced staff
they already have. These programs provide an
alternate method of qualifying current
employees to provide improved and expanded
service.
|
| Question: |
What if the trainer or building
official leaves before my training is
complete? |
| Answer: |
Building officials or trainers who move
on or retire before your training is
completed must provide a letter, to be
included with your application package,
clearly defining the portions of the
training program completed under "their
watch".
|
| Question: |
Can I receive on-the-job training
through a local agreement with a neighboring
jurisdiction if my employer doesn't have
qualified trainers? |
| Answer: |
Yes. The trainers AND the building
official in that jurisdiction must attest to
the satisfactory completion of your training
on the approved forms in your application
package.
|
| Question: |
How does one become "certified" to
become a trainer to train employees?
|
| Answer: |
In this program, anyone with a Standard
Certification in any of the trades and
employed by a City or County, working under
the direction of a Building Official, is a
trainer for that trade. There is no other
certification necessary.
|
| Question: |
Can the building official provide my
on-the-job training if there aren't any
other qualified trainers in my jurisdiction? |
| Answer: |
Only if the building official has a
Standard certification in the category
you're being trained for.
|
| Question: |
Can I substitute classroom training
from a school or organization other than
ICC? |
| Answer: |
You may if you submit certificates and
course outlines for the classroom training
you received and the BOAF Certification
Committee can determine that each course is
equivalent to the ICC courses used as a
baseline. The Certification Committee will
compare the ICC outlines that were submitted
to the BCAIB when they applied for course
approval. Outlines that do not clearly
demonstrate equivalency will be rejected as
insufficient. ALL CLASSROOM TRAINING
CERTIFICATES MUST BEAR A BCAIB COURSE
APPROVAL NUMBER.
